My wife and I knew her mother was nearing her \u201cpromotion to glory,\u201d as we say in our faith family. She\u2019d been bedridden for weeks. She hadn\u2019t spoken for some time but would occasionally open her eyes and respond to a voice or touch.<\/p>\n

We spent hours at her bedside, visiting, sometimes singing\u00a0and often reading aloud from the Bible. The passages we returned to most often were those that seemed to prompt a response from Mom. I find it comforting myself to read and pray the following Bible prayers; they seem appropriate and helpful for someone approaching the end of an earthly journey:\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0Eternal Pleasures (Psalm 16)<\/strong>
\nI often insert the other person\u2019s name (and \u201chim,\u201d \u201cher\u201d or \u201cus\u201d) in the passages I read at a bedside. In this psalm, there are multiple opportunities:<\/p>\n

Keep me safe, my God,<\/a>
\nfor in you I take refuge.
\nI say to the Lord, \u201cYou are my Lord;
\napart from you I have no good thing.\u201d
\nI say of the holy people who are in the land,
\n\u201cThey are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.\u201d
\nThose who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
\nI will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
\nor take up their names on my lips.
\nLord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
\nyou make my lot secure.
\nThe boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
\nsurely I have a delightful inheritance.
\nI will praise the Lord,<\/a> who counsels me;
\neven at night my heart instructs me.
\nI keep my eyes always on the Lord.
\nWith him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
\nTherefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
\nmy body also will rest secure,
\nbecause you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
\nnor will you let your faithful one see decay.
\nYou make known to me the path of life;
\nyou will fill me with joy<\/a> in your presence,
\nwith eternal pleasures at your right hand.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0Goodness and Mercy (Psalm 23)<\/strong>
\nBecause the Twenty-third Psalm<\/a> is so well known and beloved, I\u2019ll usually read and pray it without alteration (sometimes from the King James Version, depending on the person\u2019s background):<\/p>\n

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
\nHe makes me lie down in green pastures,
\nhe leads me beside quiet waters,
\nhe refreshes my soul.
\nHe guides me along the right paths
\nfor his name\u2019s sake.
\nEven though I walk
\nthrough the darkest valley,
\nI will fear no evil,<\/a>
\nfor you are with me;
\nyour rod and your staff,
\nthey comfort me.
\nYou prepare a table before me
\nin the presence of my enemies.
\nYou anoint my head with oil;
\nmy cup overflows.
\nSurely your goodness and love will follow me
\nall the days of my life,
\nand I will dwell in the house of the Lord
\nforever.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0Refuge and Strength (Psalm 46:1-7)<\/strong>
\nI especially love\u2014and often dwell on\u2014the central verse of this psalm, emphasizing the river whose streams \u201cmake glad\u201d the city of God:<\/p>\n

God is our refuge and strength,<\/a>
\nan ever-present help in trouble.
\nTherefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
\nand the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
\nthough its waters roar and foam
\nand the mountains quake with their surging.
\nThere is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
\nthe holy place where the Most High dwells.
\nGod is within her, she will not fall;
\nGod will help her at break of day.
\nNations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
\nhe lifts his voice, the earth melts.
\nThe Lord Almighty is with us;
\nthe God of Jacob is our fortress.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0Watching Over You (Psalm 121)<\/strong>
\nThis is another psalm that is familiar to many. I\u2019ll usually speak it directly to the person who is approaching life\u2019s end, whether or not they show signs of hearing or understanding:<\/p>\n

I lift up my eyes to the mountains\u2014<\/a>
\nwhere does my help come from?
\nMy help comes from the Lord,
\nthe Maker of heaven and earth.
\nHe will not let your foot slip\u2014
\nhe who watches over you will not slumber;
\nindeed, he who watches over Israel
\nwill neither slumber nor sleep.
\nThe Lord watches over you\u2014
\nthe Lord is your shade at your right hand;
\nthe sun will not harm you by day,
\nnor the moon by night.
\nThe Lord will keep you from all harm\u2014
\nhe will watch over your life;
\nthe Lord will watch over your coming and going
\nboth now and forevermore.<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0Calmed and Quieted (Psalm 131)<\/strong>
\nPsalm 131 is a lullaby. I sometimes pray it for myself as I lay down my head on my pillow.<\/a> It\u2019s an especially beautiful lullaby for someone who is approaching the end of this life (again, I\u2019ll substitute the person\u2019s name, especially in the last line):<\/p>\n

My heart is not proud, Lord,
\nmy eyes are not haughty;
\nI do not concern myself with great matters
\nor things too wonderful for me.
\nBut I have calmed and quieted<\/a> myself,
\nI am like a weaned child with its mother;
\nlike a weaned child I am content.
\nIsrael, put your hope in the Lord
\nboth now and forevermore.<\/p>\n

6)\u00a0\u00a0Trusting and Unafraid (Isaiah 12:2)<\/strong>
\nThese lines are so reassuring, especially to the lonely and fearful soul:\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Surely God is my salvation;
\nI will trust and not be afraid.
\nThe Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;
\nhe has become my salvation.<\/p>\n

7)\u00a0\u00a0You Are Mine (Isaiah 43:1-3a)<\/strong>
\nThese strong verses stand on their own, but I\u2019ll sometimes punctuate them with God\u2019s words to Joshua in Joshua 1:5 (\u201cAs I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you\u201d):<\/p>\n

But now, this is what the Lord says\u2014
\nhe who created you, Jacob,
\nhe who formed you, Israel:
\n\u201cDo not fear,<\/a> for I have redeemed you;
\nI have summoned you by name; you are mine.
\nWhen you pass through the waters,
\nI will be with you;
\nand when you pass through the rivers,
\nthey will not sweep over you.
\nWhen you walk through the fire,
\nyou will not be burned;
\nthe flames will not set you ablaze.
\nFor I am the Lord your God,
\nthe Holy One of Israel, your Savior.\u201d<\/p>\n

8)\u00a0\u00a0To Prepare a Place (John 14:1-3)<\/strong>
\nJesus\u2019 words to His followers, common at funerals, can supply deep comfort<\/a> in a person\u2019s last hours on earth:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father\u2019s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

9)\u00a0\u00a0Everything New (Revelation 1:1-7)<\/strong>
\nAmong the last words in the Bible is this hope-giving vision of the redeemed soul\u2019s future, when all will be new:<\/p>\n

Then I saw \u201ca new heaven<\/a> and a new earth,\u201d for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, \u201cLook! God\u2019s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. \u2018He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death\u2019 or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n

He who was seated on the throne said, \u201cI am making everything new!\u201d<\/p>\n

These are not the only things I\u2019ve read for someone who\u2019s nearing death.<\/a> But they\u2019ve often formed my prayers at such times. I hope they\u2019ll be helpful to others as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
