But if you forced me to give a narrower answer, I would say, bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>Or, to use the more liturgical term, Compline, which is the seventh and final prayer service (or office) of the day. Photo by Jayson Photography.\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/blog_nunc_350.jpg\" style=\"width:350px;height:228px;margin-left:15px;margin-right:15px;float:right\" \/>I\u2019ve written elsewhere about the <a href=\"http:\/\/desperatepastor.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/blessing-of-compline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blessing of Compline<\/a>, but one of the greatest blessings of my evening prayers is the <em>Nunc Dimittis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe What What?\u201d you might ask.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Nunc Dimittis<\/em> is the \u201cSong of Simeon\u201d or \u201cCanticle of Simeon\u201d recorded in Luke 2:29\u201332.<\/p>\n<p>The title, <em>Nunc Dimittis<\/em>, is simply the first two words of the song\u2013which is also a prayer\u2013in Latin. (\u201cNunc dimittis\u201d translates to \u201cnow dismiss.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>It was Simeon\u2019s response when he met Mary and Joseph presenting the infant Jesus in the Temple:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>According to Your word;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>For my eyes have seen Your salvation<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>And the glory of Your people Israel.<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+2%3A29-32&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 2:29-32, NKJV<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Like the <em>Magnificat<\/em>, the <em>Nunc Dimittis<\/em> is a wonderfully appropriate prayer to pray during Advent, as well as a fitting prayer for the ending of the day, which is why it is included in the text for Compline. I usually pray it in a slightly adapted form: <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>Lord, now let Your servant go in peace,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>according to Your word;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>for my eyes have seen Your salvation,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>which You have prepared in the sight of all people,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>a light to enlighten the Gentiles,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\"><em>and the glory of Your people Israel. Amen. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I\u2019ll add a word or phrase (for example, \u201cLord, now let Your servant go to sleep in peace\u201d or \u201cmy eyes have seen Your great salvation\u201d), but I pray it most evenings and usually in the exact form in which I first learned it.<\/p>\n<p>However you pray it, the <em>Nunc Dimittis<\/em> can be a fitting benediction to your Christmas celebration or to your everyday life. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If I had to choose my favorite time to pray, I would say, all the time.
