Ever feel so low that you don\u2019t know how\u2014or what\u2014to pray?<\/a> Sure, we may need prayer most at such moments, but that\u2019s also when we find it hardest to form a cohesive thought, let alone a prayer. Sometimes when that happens to me, I think of Jonah. <\/p>\n

Jonah was the ancient prophet who ran from God, got thrown off a sinking ship and was swallowed by \u201ca great fish\u201d\u2014where, the Bible says, he prayed.<\/p>\n

I always remember Jonah when I think, \u201cHow could God let this happen?\u201d or \u201cHow can I recover from this?\u201d or \u201cHow can it possibly get any worse?\u201d Because Jonah\u2019s prayer from inside a fish helps me to pray in my darkest places.<\/a> Here\u2019s how his example can help you:<\/p>\n

1) Pray Where You Are<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bible says, \u201cFrom inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God\u201d<\/a> (Jonah 2:1, NIV). <\/p>\n

Wow. He prayed there. As dark as it was. He said:<\/p>\n

In my distress I called to the Lord,
\n and he answered me.
\nFrom deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
\n and you listened to my cry. (Jonah 2:2, NIV)<\/p>\n

He prayed the facts. He didn\u2019t sugar-coat his situation. He expressed how he felt, how things truly seemed.<\/p>\n

God already knows where you are, of course; you\u2019re not telling Him anything new. But it helps you<\/em> to pray where you are, as you are.<\/p>\n

2) Give Thanks<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s incredible that Jonah prayed where he was, but it\u2019s even more amazing what he prayed.<\/a> He looked forward in hope and gave thanks: <\/p>\n

To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
\n the earth beneath barred me in forever.
\nBut you, Lord my God,
\n brought my life up from the pit. (Jonah 2:6-7, NIV)<\/p>\n

It seems unbelievable that anyone would say, from inside a fish, \u201cYou brought my life up from the pit.\u201d Though there have been times when I\u2019ve been thoroughly down, crushed by circumstances, feeling alone and bereft, when I\u2019ve started giving thanks, not even really meaning it much when I start, but thanking God that I\u2019m alive, that I\u2019m healthy, that I have the wife I have, the family I have, the friends I have\u2026the depression starts to lift. It\u2019s as if depression cannot coexist in the human heart with gratitude,<\/a> as if one will drive out the other.<\/p>\n

3) Affirm What You Know Is True<\/strong>
\nAs Jonah\u2019s prayer continues, he says:<\/p>\n

Those who cling to worthless idols
\nforfeit the grace that could be theirs. (Jonah 2:8, NIV)<\/p>\n

It seems out of place\u2026until you notice that virtually every line of his prayer echoes a psalm<\/a>\u2014at least 13 different psalms, in fact. So, clearly this wasn\u2019t the first time Jonah prayed. The psalms were a part of his prayer language. <\/p>\n

Sometimes we wait until we\u2019re in the belly of a fish, figuratively speaking, before we cry out to God. But that\u2019s like waiting to take piano lessons until you\u2019re booked to play Carnegie Hall. Not Jonah. The school of prayer had prepared him for the school of hard knocks. It can be the same for us. Daily prayer is both performance (for an audience of one) and practice (for a performance yet to come).<\/a> <\/p>\n

When you cry out to God from a dark place, remember what you\u2019ve heard and read and prayed in the past. Repeat those things. Affirm them. Hold onto them. <\/p>\n

4) Await Your Deliverance<\/strong>
\nJonah\u2019s prayer from inside the fish concludes:<\/p>\n

But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
\n will sacrifice to you.
\nWhat I have vowed I will make good.
\n I will say, \u201cSalvation comes from the Lord.\u201d (Jonah 2:9, NIV)<\/p>\n

Amazing. Doesn\u2019t he know he\u2019s in an impossible situation?<\/a> Obviously not. He\u2019s praying like it\u2019s just a matter of time before he is delivered. And it was. <\/p>\n

Deliverance from your dark place may come sooner\u2026or later. It may come after three days, as it did for Jonah, or after 40 years, like the deliverance of Israel from the Sinai. It may be a deliverance from<\/em> your trial, like Peter\u2019s rescue from prison, or a deliverance through<\/em> your trial, like the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace.<\/p>\n

But sooner or later, \u201cfrom\u201d or \u201cthrough,\u201d \u201cSalvation comes from the Lord\u201d (Jonah 2:9-10, NIV). Until then, keep praying\u2014even in your darkest place.<\/a><\/p>\n
