{"id":24113,"date":"2026-03-11T15:38:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T15:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/6-ways-to-pray-without-ceasing\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:17:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:17:39","slug":"6-ways-to-pray-without-ceasing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/6-ways-to-pray-without-ceasing\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Ways to \u2018Pray Without Ceasing\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s there in the letter Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, that intimidating phrase, \u201cpray without ceasing\u201d or \u201cpray continually.\u201d I read it and wonder, \u201cIs that really possible?\u201d If so, how? Here are a few ways I try.<\/p>\n<p><em>1)  Love God with all your heart, mind and soul.<\/em> When Jesus emphasized the importance of this commandment, it\u2019s about priorities. What matters most in my life? How do I measure success? Where do I seek and find happiness?<\/p>\n<p>Love is so much bigger in God\u2019s world than it is in our mundane lives. We\u2019re supposed to do it all the time, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/bible-resources\/deepen-your-faith\/open-your-heart-to-gods-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this feels to me like praying<\/a>. Continually. Living a life that puts our love of God\u2014and loving our neighbor as ourselves\u2014first. Every action, every reflection, every thought has the potential to be part of this BIG prayer.<\/p>\n<p><em>2)  Don\u2019t limit your notions of prayer.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/5-ways-to-make-your-prayers-a-conversation-with-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prayer is conversation with God.<\/a> And mind you, silence is certainly an enriching part of any conversation\u2014think of how we use that phrase \u201ca comfortable silence\u201d to describe the quiet between two people who know each other well.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re with our loved ones we communicate so much without words. A sigh, a shrug, an embrace, a willingness to help. \u201cHere, let me do that,\u201d we say. Or we simply do it. By all means, use verbal prayer in your communication with the Lord. But don\u2019t forget how much can be said without any words at all. Continually.<\/p>\n<p><em>3)  Give yourself moments of silence.<\/em> Sit for a moment. Close your eyes. Listen to your breath. Breathe in God\u2019s love\u2026and breathe out some of the distractions that can so easily get in the way of a loving relationship. With God and those \u201cneighbors\u201d of ours.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, silence doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re saying nothing. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/how-to-find-god-in-silence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It\u2019s keeping the focus in the right place.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>4)  Use your body in prayer<\/em>. I think of the old high school football cheer we used to say, \u201cLean to the left, lean to the right, come on team, fight, fight, fight.\u201d We moved in the bleachers as we said it. Life is full of movement\u2014we walk, we climb stairs, we sit, we stand, we lean, we bend. As you feel your body moving, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/why-you-should-walk-and-pray-at-the-same-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feel the Creator work through you.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Sitting there in front of the computer. Pause and put your hands on the opposite shoulders or around your waist. Give yourself a hug. From God.<\/p>\n<p><em>5)  Give thanks<\/em>. That very verse in Thessalonians is followed by the lovely admonishment: <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/positive-thinking\/in-everything-give-thanks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgive thanks in all circumstances\u2026\u201d<\/a> It\u2019s that \u201call\u201d that often causes us to stumble. But think of the trials and setbacks Paul himself suffered. If he could give thanks in all things, can\u2019t I?<\/p>\n<p>The most thankful people are not necessarily the ones you expect. Volunteering at our church\u2019s soup kitchen, I\u2019ve gotten to know some of our regular guests. I can\u2019t begin to fathom the misfortunes and losses they\u2019ve suffered. And yet, they are the most grateful people I\u2019ve ever met. As one of them said to me recently, \u201cGod is here.\u201d Thankful without ceasing.<\/p>\n<p><em>6)  Let go.<\/em> Living a life of constant prayer means living the Lord\u2019s Prayer, backwards and forwards, especially that challenge of \u201cThy will be done.\u201d Acceptance. Seeing that God\u2019s will\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/3-ways-to-pray-for-healing-from-the-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greater than we might imagine<\/a> is at work.
