I have read\u2014and seen performed\u2014all of his plays, most of them many times. I can sit in a performance of <em>Hamlet<\/em> or <em>Much Ado About Nothing<\/em> and laugh like a madman or cry like a baby at the beauty of his thoughts and words.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, many people start to nod off as soon as his name is mentioned. They recall droning lectures and 9th grade readings of <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But even people who think Shakespeare is oh-so-boring, have been enriched, even shaped, by his words\u2014from \u201cTo be or not to be\u201d to \u201cNeither a borrower nor a lender be\u201d and \u201cThe quality of mercy is not strained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"436\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-45308\" alt=\"The Bard and the Bible by Bob Hostetler\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/thebardthebiblecopy.jpg\" style=\"width: 300px;height: 436px;margin-left: 15px;margin-right: 15px;float: right\" \/>Such thoughts and words have long shaped my life and my writing (so much so that I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobhostetler.com\/the-bard-and-the-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Bard and the Bible (A Shakespeare Devotional)<\/em><\/a>, a book of daily readings that pairs a quote from Shakespeare, a verse from the King James Bible (created in the same period and the same city as Shakespeare\u2019s works), and a short reflection that compares or contrasts the two.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Shakespeare\u2019s words have even shaped my praying, as I have often echoed the Bard\u2019s words in my prayers:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)  A Morning Prayer<\/strong><br \/>\nSome days it feels as though I am heading out to do battle, as Henry V did before the battle of Agincourt. So I will sometimes make his short prayer of trust and abandonment my own:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">How thou pleasest, God, dispose the day!<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(Henry V, IV, 3)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2)  A Prayer of Confession<\/strong><br \/>\nThough I\u2019ve never killed my brother (or married his wife!), I have occasionally adapted the confession of Claudius in <em>Hamlet<\/em> to begin my own prayers of confession, remembering that \u201cAll may be well\u201d when we confess our sins and experience God\u2019s pardon:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">O wretched state! O bosom black as death!<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">O limed soul, that struggling to be free<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Art more engag\u2019d. Help, angels! Make assay,<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Bow, stubborn knees, and heart, with strings of steel,<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Be soft as sinews of the newborn babe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">All may be well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(Hamlet, III, 3)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3)  A Prayer of Petition<\/strong><br \/>\nIn <em>As You Like It<\/em>, Orlando\u2019s encounter with the exiled duke starts off badly. But he apologizes, explaining that he hopes his gentleness from that moment on will make up for his previous conduct. He says,<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Let gentleness my strong enforcement be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(As You Like It, II, 7)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have made Orlando\u2019s prayer my own on numerous occasions when I regretted my actions and, after swallowing my pride, tried to make a new start . . . with gentleness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/faith-in-daily-life\/ourprayer-ministry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Ask Guideposts&#8217; OurPrayer team to pray for you!<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4)  A Prayer for Gratitude<\/strong><br \/>\nAmong the first words Henry VI speaks in one of three history plays that tell the story of his reign are these:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">O Lord, who lends me life, <\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">lend me a heart replete with thankfulness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(Henry VI, Part II, I, 1)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He applies the words to his gratitude for his wife, but I have applied those words to a multitude of settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5)  A Prayer of Praise<\/strong><br \/>\nI also frequently \u201crepurpose\u201d Florizel\u2019s words, which he spoke in <em>The Winter\u2019s Tale<\/em> to praise his sweetheart, Perdita:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">What you do<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Still betters what is done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(The Winter&#8217;s Tale, IV, 4)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I make those lines a prayer of praise to God. When I see an amazing sunset, hear a moving song,or glimpse a blooming flower, I pray, \u201cWhat you do still betters what is done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>6)  A Wedding Prayer<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the last act of <em>Henry V<\/em>, Queen Isabel of France prays the following for her daughter as she is given in marriage to the victorious King of England after the battle of Agincourt:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">God, the best maker of all marriages,<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">Combine your hearts in one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\"><em>(Henry V, V, 2)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Though the participants rarely recognize it as a quote from Shakespeare, I will occasionally pronounce the above prayer in a wedding ceremony or pen them in a wedding card.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7)  A Prayer of Trust<\/strong><br \/>\nShakespeare\u2019s last recorded prayer may be contained in the first line of his last will and testament, dated January 25, 1616, just three months before he died:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\">I commend my soul into the hands of God my Creator, believing through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Savior, to be made a partaker of life everlasting.<\/p>\n<p>It resembles the prayer of Jesus on the cross, recorded in Luke 23:46: \u201cFather, into thy hands I commend my spirit,\u201d which was in Shakespeare\u2019s day a part of the funeral service in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.<\/p>\n<p>These are not the only prayers found in Shakespeare, but they are the seven I recall and repeat most often. If they turn out to be helpful to you in putting a little more poetry into your prayers, I will say, \u201cAmen, amen\u201d <em>(Coriolanus, III, 3)<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am something of a Shakespeare nut.
