It\u2019s easy to get stuck in a prayer rut<\/a>\u2014praying the same things in the same way over and over. God still hears us, but we can experience delight and reward in exploring new prayer paths. For me, one has been praying the \u201cI Am\u201d statements of Jesus.<\/p>\n

John\u2019s Gospel, the fourth account of Jesus\u2019 life in the Bible, relates seven clear and concise word pictures Jesus used to refer to Himself, each starting with the ancient \u201cname\u201d God gave Moses at the burning bush: \u201cI Am.\u201d Each statement is rich in meaning. Each can usher the reader or listener into a deeper understanding of Jesus. And each suggests a new path for us to take in prayer.<\/a><\/p>\n

1) I Am the Bread of Life (John 6:35)<\/strong>
\nIn the ancient world, bread was a common and critical feature of people\u2019s daily diets. It was a key to survival and often, literally, the difference between life and death. Pray to Jesus as \u201cthe Bread of Life,\u201d<\/a> the One who gave you life and Who sustains and nourishes you. <\/p>\n

2) I Am the Light of the World (John 8:12)<\/strong>
\nJust as bread held daily importance to people in Jesus\u2019 time, so did light. Whether it was the light of a torch, oil lamp or sunrise, light brought safety, clarity and health.<\/a> Turn to Jesus as \u201cthe Light of the World\u201d\u2014your<\/em> Light\u2014to seek those blessings. <\/p>\n

3) I Am the Door of the Sheep (John 10:7, 9)<\/strong>
\nWhen Jesus said this, He evoked a familiar rural scene: a sheep pen enclosed by a gate or the reclining body of the shepherd himself. The \u201cdoor\u201d kept the flock safe from attacks and accidents. Your prayers to Jesus as \u201cthe Door of the Sheep\u201d can appeal to His care and keeping, enabling you to rest secure<\/a> in the knowledge that He guards you. <\/p>\n

4) I Am the Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14)<\/strong>
\nJesus expanded on this theme by enlarging the analogy from the shepherd who guards to the shepherd who guides. He knows His sheep, calling each one by name. He leads them \u201cin the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake\u201d (Psalm 23:3 KJV). Pray to your \u201cGood Shepherd,\u201d<\/a> who knows you, calls you by name and guides you in the right direction, day to day and moment to moment.<\/p>\n

5) I Am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25)<\/strong>
\nIt was a bold thing for Jesus to claim\u2014at a funeral\u2014that He is \u201cthe resurrection and the life.\u201d But He proved it by calling Lazarus out of the grave.<\/a> He still proves His power today by giving new life to dead hopes, shattered dreams and broken lives. Call on Him as \u201cthe Resurrection and the Life.\u201d Let His resurrection power \u201cmake all things new\u201d for you (see Revelation 21:5 KJV). <\/p>\n

6) I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6)<\/strong>
\nThis is perhaps the most well-known \u201cI Am\u201d statement of Jesus. Calling on Him as \u201cthe Way, the Truth and the Life\u201d is a wonderful way to pray, especially if you crave direction,<\/a> need wisdom or feel deflated or depleted. <\/p>\n

7) I Am the True Vine (John 15:1)<\/strong>
\nEveryone in Jesus\u2019 day would have understood this revelation as vineyards proliferated (and still do) in the land of Israel. He went on to explain the meaning of the metaphor, which is the absolute necessity of constant connection with Him (\u201cabiding\u201d) in order to produce the kind of fruit our lives need. So, pray to your \u201cTrue Vine,\u201d asking Him to help you keep that connection <\/a>alive and productive.<\/p>\n

As you regularly pray the \u201cI Am\u201d statements, Jesus will come closer and His true nature will become clearer. And, as He answers your prayers, \u201cGod will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus!\u201d (Philippians 4:19 CEV).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
