You see, if you offer to pray for someone you don\u2019t know by asking, \u201cMay I pray for you?\u201d you\u2019ll usually be turned down; most people worry that an open-ended prayer could carry on for who-knows-how-long, and could become downright embarrassing. But a 10-second prayer feels much safer.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to try it. After you\u2019ve met someone and shared a few words\u2014in line at the grocery store or at a bus stop, perhaps\u2014before parting, ask, \u201cMay I pray a 10-second prayer for you?\u201d They may say, <span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px;\">\u201c<\/span>no.<span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px;\">\u201d<\/span> But they may say, <span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px;\">\u201c<\/span>yes.<span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For a 10-second prayer, keep the following 5 tips in mind:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Start with a prayer of availability.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">The Bible is full of the stories of people who were willing to pray those electrifying words, \u201cHere I am Lord, send me.\u201d So start by praying a variation: \u201cHere I am Lord. Use me.\u201d When we tell God we are willing to be used by Him, we\u2019re saying, \u201cI am willing to be interrupted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet said, \u201cThe readiness is all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Turn on your \u201cnoticing radar.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">The Holy Spirit is able\u2014even excited\u2014to communicate with you. Jesus walked through life with his \u201cspiritual radar\u201d on 24\/7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once when He was walking past the Pool of Bethesda, He and his friends saw dozens, maybe hundreds, of sick and crippled people gathered around that pool hoping to be healed. Jesus walked past everyone, except for a man who had never walked. After an exchange of just a few words with Jesus, the crippled man walked.<\/p>\n<p>Later Jesus explained why He only prayed for one man: \u201cI only do what I see the Father doing\u201d (John 5:19, paraphrase).<\/p>\n<p>Turn on your radar. Ask the Spirit, \u201cHelp me to see what You are up to around me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/blog\/10-breath-prayers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>READ MORE: 10 QUICK \u201cBREATH PRAYERS\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Focus on God\u2019s power, not on your fears.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">Relax. Let God do what you can\u2019t do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">We so easily talk ourselves into believing the lie that something isn\u2019t possible: \u201cYeah, I\u2019d love to pray for that person, but that\u2019s not something a person like me is wired to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">If that sounds like you, develop the habit of praying, \u201cYou deal with my fears, God.\u201d Then dive in head first, despite your fears and watch God work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Ask God to pray His prayer through you.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">When you meet someone, or as you\u2019re talking with someone, try silently praying, \u201cGod, pray your prayer through me; flow through me with your joy and encouragement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">As you do, a prayer will often form in your heart and mind before you even ask the other person if you can pray a ten-second prayer. Sometimes it will even come into your mind as a picture, allowing you to envision a blessing for them, such as, \u201cIn the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit, I bless you with His life and love.\u201d Or, \u201cI pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul\u201d (3 John 1:2, ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Don\u2019t forget to have fun!<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429;\">This might be the most important point of all. Paul wrote, \u201cWhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Relax! Smile! Enjoy the freedom from fear that comes upon you when the Spirit of the Lord is present.
