I want so much more. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not talking about material things, primarily (though I wouldn\u2019t mind some new outdoor furniture and maybe a fire pit). But if you\u2019re anything like me, you tend to be fairly content with your life, health, home, income, relationships, etc.\u2014until something happens.<\/a> Until your back starts to hurt or you\u2019re laid off or you lose a friend. Or something else.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s when a part of our life falls apart<\/a> that we tend to be driven to prayer, right? \u201cGod, heal.\u201d \u201cLord, restore.\u201d And so on. <\/p>\n

One of the most haunting verses of Scripture is James 4:2 in which the author says, \u201cYou do not have because you do not ask God\u201d<\/a> (NIV). Or, as the more rhythmic King James Version puts it, \u201cYe have not, because ye ask not.\u201d <\/p>\n

Wow. If that\u2019s true (and it is), wow. <\/p>\n

That short verse\u2014just seven words in the KJV\u2014challenges me. It also instills hope. How many things do I lack because I haven\u2019t thought to ask God for them? Put another way, while my prayer list is filled with reactive<\/em> prayers\u2014prompted by a need that\u2019s cropped up or some problem I\u2019m facing\u2014what if I\u2019m neglecting proactive<\/em> prayers? Prayers to prevent problems from arising or to invite blessings I have yet to experience? <\/a><\/p>\n

If you were to compile a list of things you\u2019ve never asked for, what would be on it? I ask that question not to provoke guilt or regret, but to suggest vast new vistas for prayer.<\/p>\n

For example, until recently, I\u2019d never prayed for flexible and pain-free joints. I\u2019d never asked for a new friend who loves baseball<\/a> like I do (and with whom I might watch games from time to time). I\u2019d never before asked to avoid future injury or surgery, to be protected from hepatitis or cancer, to be surprised by a call from one of my children. I\u2019d never before asked for car tires to stay properly inflated, for friends to avoid debt or divorce, for my internal organs to keep functioning well, and more. <\/p>\n

Since meditating on James 4:2, \u201cnever before\u201d prayers have almost become a form of holy recreation for me. I\u2019ve found joy in sometimes saying to God, \u201cYou know, Lord, wouldn\u2019t it be great if today\u2019s mail brought a blessing of some kind?\u201d<\/a> Or, \u201cGod, I\u2019ve never asked you to pre-emptively deliver me from kidney stones, so I\u2019m asking now.\u201d My prayers have become more creative, visionary and exciting with the injection of \u201cnever before\u201d prayers into my conversation with God. Maybe they\u2019ll do the same for you.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
