{"id":24397,"date":"2026-03-11T16:02:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T16:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/the-prayer-box\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:18:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T06:18:10","slug":"the-prayer-box","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/the-prayer-box\/","title":{"rendered":"The Prayer Box"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">I recently wrote a blog about <a href=\"http:\/\/guideposts.org\/blog\/a-box-of-encouragement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beginning an encouragement box<\/a><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">, and one of my sweet friends from high school, JoniSue, commented on my blog post that she didn\u2019t have an Encouragement Box, but she did have a Prayer Box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I had to know more. (The only prayer box I\u2019d ever possessed was a tiny silver prayer box charm that was attached to a bracelet I often wore until I lost it in our move from Texas to Indiana in 2006.)<\/p>\n<p>JoniSue said she was inspired to begin her Prayer Box after reading the book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/161795182X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The God Box<\/em><\/a> by Mary Lou Quinlan. In the book, a family finds their late mother\u2019s \u201cGod Box\u201d\u2013actually they find 10 boxes stuffed with hundreds of hand-written prayers for family, friends and people she had never even met.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-42479\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blog_prayerbox_350.jpg\" style=\"width: 350px;height: 467px;margin-left: 15px;margin-right: 15px;float: right\" \/>\u201cThat book touched my heart,\u201d JoniSue shared. \u201cI thought, <em>I could write prayers for sick friends, my family, my husband, my animals\u2026or even when something is weighing heavy on my heart<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, she began that very day.<\/p>\n<p>JoniSue already had the perfect little box that she had purchased at a shop called, \u201cNoah\u2019s Ark\u201d on Sanibel Island during one of their beach vacations. So, from that day forward, her cute little shell box became her official prayer box, and she\u2019s been stuffing it full of prayers ever since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does remind me to pray for people,\u201d she shared. \u201cSometimes I\u2019m not even at home and think of someone I need to pray for so I\u2019ll put little notes in my purse to throw in the box later.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px\">\u201c<\/span>It makes me more aware that even though these little pieces of paper sit in a box, they do not go unheard. I know God is aware as I write them\u2026it just makes me happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It makes God happy, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Word says: <span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 18.1818180084229px\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\"> (1 Timothy 2:1-4, NLT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Verse 4 confirms that it pleases God when we lift up one another in prayer. In fact, we\u2019re called to do so.<\/p>\n<p>And, our prayers make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>James 5:16b says, \u201cThe earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results\u201d (NLT).<\/p>\n<p>JoniSue can say \u201cAmen\u201d to that. I can second it, and I bet you have stories of answered prayers, as well. Hallelujah!<\/p>\n<p>You see, prayer changes things while worrying produces no positive results. So, rather than worrying about the needs in your loved ones\u2019 lives or fretting about a situation you can\u2019t do anything about, write a prayer note and stuff it into your prayer box.<\/p>\n<p>Philippians 4:6 says, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done\u201d (NLT).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s pretty clear, isn\u2019t it?  <\/p>\n<p>Maybe like me, you\u2019ve never had an actual prayer box. I have kept a prayer journal for years but I like the idea of a prayer box even more because it would be visible all the time. My prayer journal may be buried in my tote bag or at the bottom of my big purse, but a prayer box would sit in a place of prominence as a reminder to thank God that He is answering those prayers that are tucked away inside.<\/p>\n<p>As I was writing this blog, I noticed a decorative treasure chest box I have sitting on my desk that currently houses paperclips but from this day forward, it will hold prayers, special prayer requests and precious answers to prayer.<\/p>\n<p>A book inspired JoniSue to start her very own prayer box, and JoniSue has inspired me.
