I\u2019m a firm believer in praying what you really feel. <\/a>In my prayers, I\u2019ve cried in frustration, complained of ill treatment and told God what I think of certain people. I\u2019ve even expressed my anger at God. Yet, for all my (possibly foolish) honesty, there\u2019s one kind of prayer I\u2019ve been careful to avoid, prayer after prayer, year after year. I call it the \u201cno way\u201d prayer.<\/p>\n

Simon Peter, one of Jesus\u2019 first and closest followers,<\/a> uttered the most well-known example of this prayer. On that occasion, Jesus told His disciples that he would eventually suffer and die in Jerusalem and on the third day be raised to life. Peter answered, \u201cNever, Lord! \u2026This shall never happen to you!\u201d (Matthew 16:22 NIV).<\/p>\n

His \u201cno way\u201d prayer elicited such a strong rebuke from Jesus<\/a> that it makes me cringe: \u201cGet behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns\u201d (Matthew 16:23 NIV).<\/p>\n

Ouch. Jesus tolerated a lot from Peter, but his \u201cno way\u201d prayer was apparently beyond the pale.<\/p>\n

You might think that hearing \u201cGet behind me, Satan\u201d from Jesus would have prompted Peter to strike \u201cno way\u201d from his prayer repertoire\u2026but you\u2019d be wrong.<\/p>\n

On the night of Jesus\u2019 betrayal and arrest, when Jesus predicted that Peter would deny Him, Peter issued another \u201cno way\u201d prayer: \u201cI will never say that I don\u2019t know you! I will even die with you!\u201d (Matthew 26:35 NCV). This time, however, when Jesus\u2019 other disciples heard the exchange, they made the same claim. On this occasion, Peter\u2019s \u201cno way\u201d prayer presaged his most devastating failure.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ouch again. You might think that Peter\u2019s second \u201cno way\u201d prayer, which preceded such humiliating defeat, would\u2019ve been his last\u2026but you\u2019d be wrong.<\/p>\n

After Jesus\u2019 death and resurrection, Peter became a different man. He spoke publicly and courageously<\/a> of his risen Savior. He suffered arrest and imprisonment for his preaching. But one day, while praying in the seaside town of Joppa, Peter had a vision:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, \u2018Get up, Peter. Kill and eat\u2019\u201d (Acts 10:10-13 NIV).<\/p>\n

Peter recognized the voice; it was the Lord\u2019s. But the voice had told him to eat food that was forbidden to Jews like Peter, so he answered in much the same way as he had twice before: \u201c\u2018Surely not, Lord!\u2019 Peter replied. \u2018I have never eaten anything impure or unclean\u2019\u201d (Acts 10:14 NIV).<\/p>\n

In other words, \u201cno way.\u201d As my mother used to say of me, \u201cSome people never learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

The voice spoke again, saying, \u201cDo not call anything impure that God has made clean\u201d (Acts 10:15 NIV). It was a message that immediately resulted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ being taken to, shared with and accepted by non-Jews.<\/p>\n

Peter\u2019s \u201cno way\u201d prayers\u2014and the rebukes or corrections they elicited\u2014have stuck with me and taught me over the years. I\u2019ve learned from Peter\u2019s example<\/a> to avoid the \u201cno way\u201d prayer. Not that I don\u2019t sometimes object to\u2014even argue with\u2014God; I do. But even when I think I\u2019m being \u201crighteous,\u201d as Peter did, I stop short of \u201cno way.\u201d I may demur or delay for a while when God seems to be asking or telling me something I don\u2019t like, but I avoid saying \u201cno way.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know the Lord was beautifully gracious to Peter, even hosting a lakeside breakfast to overcome the guilt and shame of Peter\u2019s worst failure. He\u2019s been similarly patient and forgiving toward me, always. But I still do my best to avoid saying \u201cnever\u201d or \u201cnot so\u201d or \u201cno way\u201d to Jesus.<\/p>\n

Instead, I wait until my heart and head reach a point of surrender and submission<\/a> that allows me to replace \u201cno way\u201d with the Jesus prayer: \u201cnot my will, but yours, be done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
