For two millennia, faithful followers of Jesus have prayed the words that He taught His disciples: \u201cMay Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.\u201d<\/a> But have we paused to think through what it really means?<\/p>\n

We tend to attach that phrase \u201con earth as it is in heaven\u201d only to the third petition of the Lord\u2019s Prayer,<\/a> \u201cMay Your will be done.\u201d But it\u2019s possible\u2014linguistically and theologically\u2014 that Jesus intended that phrase to modify all three petitions that precede it. <\/p>\n

In other words, He may have taught us to pray, \u201cMay Your name be kept holy on earth as it is in heaven, may Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven, and may Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.\u201d <\/p>\n

After all, God\u2019s name is hallowed perfectly and thoroughly by every inhabitant of heaven:<\/a> \u201cHoly, holy, holy,\u201d they cry, \u201cthrowing down their golden crowns beside the crystal sea.\u201d <\/p>\n

And His kingdom is undisputed and untrammeled in heaven, where the Lamb who was slain receives all the \u201cpower and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise\u201d (Revelation 5:12 NIV) that are His due. And of course, the host of heaven does God\u2019s will instantly, constantly, completely and worshipfully.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I pray when I say, \u201con earth as it is in heaven.\u201d I pray for God\u2019s will<\/a> to be done instantly<\/em>\u2014that there will be no delay in His will being accomplished. <\/p>\n

I pray for God\u2019s will to be done constantly<\/em>\u2014that there will be no cessation or vacation from the will of God being accomplished.<\/p>\n

I pray for God\u2019s will to be done completely<\/em>\u2014that there will be no half measures in the accomplishing of His will. <\/a><\/p>\n

And, finally, I pray for God\u2019s will to be done worshipfully<\/em>\u2014that, like the angels of heaven,<\/a> who happily, vocally and brilliantly speed to do God\u2019s bidding, His name may be glorified, His kingdom may come, and His will may be accomplished here on earth. <\/p>\n

Of course, implicit in the prayer for God\u2019s will to be done \u201con earth as it is in heaven\u201d is the praying soul\u2019s own submission to God\u2019s will. It makes no sense to pray for these things to be accomplished everywhere but in me. Thus, \u201cMay Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven\u201d means \u201cI will do what You say.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

So, for me, praying \u201con earth as it is in heaven\u201d is a daily act of surrender, <\/a>willingness and eager, obedient intention. It is a renewed commitment of my life to the cause of Jesus Christ. And it\u2019s a happy reminder of the privilege I enjoy in serving the Almighty God of the universe in all that He wants to do on earth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
