When Jesus taught His first followers to pray, He told them to pray (in the words of the King James Version), \u201cHallowed by Thy Name.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n

Say what?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the first request in The Lord\u2019s Prayer<\/a>, but what are we really saying when we pray those words<\/a>? It\u2019s a phrase that is as important to understand as it is easy to misunderstand, not least because various Bible translations and versions express it differently:<\/p>\n

\u201cUphold the holiness of Your name.\u201d (Common English Bible)<\/p>\n

\u201cLet Your name be kept holy.\u201d (God\u2019s Word Translation)<\/p>\n

\u201cMay Your name be honored.\u201d (J. B. Phillips translation)<\/p>\n

\u201cMay Your name always be kept holy.\u201d (New Century Version)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible that Jesus was echoing the Kedushat HaShem, an ancient prayer that has been passed down through the centuries as the third blessing of the Amidah, the daily blessings recited by observant Jews. Early in their evening prayers, Jews will say, \u201cYou are holy, and Your Name is holy, and Your holy ones praise You every day. Blessed are You, Adonai, the God who is holy.\u201d<\/p>\n

If that\u2019s the case, though, Jesus rendered the affirmation of the Kedushat HaShem as a petition. He changed \u201cYou are holy, and Your Name is holy\u201d to \u201cMay Your Name be kept holy.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to author Philip Keller:<\/p>\n

What we would say in modern idiom is something like this: \u201cMay You be honored, revered and respected because of who You are. May Your reputation, name, person and character be untarnished, uncontaminated, unsullied. May nothing be done to debase or defame Your record.<\/p>\n

So, in saying \u201challowed be Thy name\u201d\u2014if we are sincere\u2014we agree to guard God\u2019s reputation and protect the integrity and holiness of \u201cHaShem,\u201d the Name. To \u201challow\u201d God\u2019s name, then, means at least three things:<\/p>\n

1) Trusting<\/strong>
\nOnce, when God\u2019s people were wandering in the Sinai wilderness after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt, they complained because of a lack of water. So God told Moses<\/a> to speak to the face of a cliff where they had camped, promising that water would flow from the rock. Rather than speaking to the rock, however, Moses struck it with his staff\u2014 which had played a part in several miracles back in Egypt.<\/p>\n

God later said to Moses and Aaron, \u201cBecause you did not believe in Me, to uphold Me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them\u201d (Numbers 20:12, ESV). Believing God\u2014 trusting Him and taking Him at His word\u2014\u201challows\u201d His name and upholds His reputation.<\/p>\n

2) Obeying<\/strong>
\nWhen God gave His commandments to His people, He told them, \u201cSo you shall keep My commandments and do them: I am the Lord. And you shall not profane My holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel\u201d (Leviticus 22:31\u201332, ESV). In other words, a lifestyle of submission and obedience to God \u201challows\u201d His name\u2014not a legalistic Puritanism but a winsome, day-by-day pursuit of God<\/a> and His ways.<\/p>\n

3) Rejoicing<\/strong>
\nWhen David\u2019s second attempt to return the ark of the covenant\u2014the symbol of God\u2019s presence with His people\u2014to Jerusalem was successful, he was so overcome with joy that he threw off his kingly robes and danced with abandon in the holy procession. His wife, Michal, however, berated her husband because, she said, \u201che exposed himself like a fool in the sight of the servant women of his officials!\u201d But David answered, \u201cI was dancing to honor the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and his family to make me the leader of His people Israel. And I will go on dancing to honor the Lord\u201d (2 Samuel 6:20\u201322, GNT). Joy\u2014in worship, in trial, in the details of daily life\u2014honors God. When our lives exude \u201cthe joy of the Lord\u201d<\/a> (Nehemiah 8:10), God\u2019s name is hallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHallowed be Thy name\u201d is a request and an attitude like that of a friend of mine, who would send her children to school every morning with the admonition, \u201cRemember who you are,\u201d repeating the family name and making it clear that they were expected to bring honor, not shame, to that name. That\u2019s what we\u2019re saying when we pray, \u201cHallowed be Thy name.\u201d<\/p>\n
