Maybe you\u2019ve said it. I know I have: \u201cIf I had my<\/em> way\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s prompted by dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs\u2014which has been pretty often so far this year. At other times, it has more to do with a disappointment I\u2019ve faced or a fear I have. And most of the time (maybe all of the time?) it\u2019s an arrogant endorsement of my own wisdom and righteousness. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it\u2019s a good thing that I pray. And even better, that I pray daily. And still better, that the Lord\u2019s Prayer<\/a> is always a part of my prayers because it includes an important reminder to me in the phrase, \u201cThy will be done.\u201d<\/a> It\u2019s a reminder that \u201cmy way\u201d isn\u2019t always, or even usually, the best way. It\u2019s a prayer that, when I\u2019m most attentive and aware, says at least three crucial things: <\/p>\n

1) I Belong<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrew Murray wrote, \u201cBecause the will of God is the glory of heaven, the doing of it is the blessedness of heaven. As the will is done, the kingdom of heaven comes into the heart. And wherever faith has accepted the Father\u2019s love, obedience accepts the Father\u2019s will.\u201d <\/p>\n

Praying \u201cThy will be done\u201d is an affirmation that I belong to God\u2019s kingdom, and His kingdom belongs to me. Just as His kingdom is undisputed and unimpeded in heaven\u2014where the angelic host does His will instantly, constantly, completely and worshipfully\u2014so I get to play a part in bringing that heaven to Earth. <\/p>\n

2) I Surrender<\/strong><\/p>\n

Implicit in the prayer for God\u2019s will to \u201cbe done on earth as it is in heaven\u201d is the praying soul\u2019s submission to God\u2019s will. It makes no sense to pray for God\u2019s will to be done everywhere but in me. Thus, \u201cMay Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven\u201d means \u201cI will do what You say.\u201d It is an act of surrender and willingness<\/a>, an eager and obedient intention.<\/p>\n

3) I Choose Love<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the way of Jesus is the way of love\u2014and it is, for He emphasized the commands to \u201clove God\u201d and \u201clove your neighbor\u201d as the sum of all the commandments\u2014then sincerely praying for His will to be done on earth means obeying His command to love all and love always.<\/p>\n

It means rejecting \u201call bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice\u201d (Ephesians 4:31, NIV). It means acting in humility, gentleness, patience, love, kindness, compassion and forgiveness (see Ephesians 4:2, 32) toward others. <\/p>\n

It may also mean personal sacrifice; after all, the words of the Lord\u2019s Prayer were tried and tested, proven and polished, in the Lord\u2019s passion. He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane<\/a>, \u201cMy Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as you will\u201d (Matthew 26:39, NIV). <\/p>\n

Jesus not only taught, \u201cMay Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,\u201d He prayed it Himself, and lived it \u201cto death\u2014even death on a cross!\u201d (Philippians 2:8, NIV).<\/p>\n

\u201cThy will be done\u201d reminds me daily that having \u201cmy way\u201d<\/a> is an infinitely inferior way to think and live. \u201cThy will be done\u201d re-orients me to the One whose \u201cgood, perfect and pleasing will\u201d (Romans 12:2, NIV) is the one path worth following. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
