What fills my head and heart is <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/power-of-prayer\/chrissy-metz-s-new-movie-explores-the-power-of-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a life of prayer, <\/a>something we four kids witnessed. Here\u2019s what I learned from Dad about prayer: <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Anything goes.<\/em><\/strong> Dad said <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/grace-at-dinnertime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grace every night at dinner,<\/a> long extemporaneous prayers, full of whatever was going on in his head or the news he\u2019d heard on the radio as he drove home from work. Is there anything we shouldn\u2019t pray about? No. God knows the secrets of our heart. Why not share it with the Lord? Anything and everything.<\/p>\n<p>When our boys were young, they\u2019d take turns saying grace at dinner. They were good models for us. Because indeed we heard\u2014and learned\u2014what was going in on their lives. A laundry list of requests? Not for a parent. Heavenly or otherwise.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"float:right\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-49647\" alt=\" Rick's dad at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/ricks_dad.jpg\" width=\"359\" \/><figcaption>   Rick\u2019s dad at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Pray with your loved ones.<\/em><\/strong> As a kid, when I <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-strength\/cant-sleep-how-to-pray-for-peace-of-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">couldn\u2019t fall asleep at night,<\/a> I\u2019d amble into Mom and Dad\u2019s room, groggy-eyed and tired. Dad would walk me back to bed\u2014no remonstrating\u2014and tuck me in. Then he\u2019d pray me to sleep. <\/p>\n<p>Quietly he\u2019d talk to me, putting my body to rest. \u201cNow you can feel your feet getting tired, and your legs, your arms too\u2026\u201d From my toes to the crown of my head. Even today, when I can\u2019t fall asleep, I\u2019ll picture Dad there, talking me to sleep, his hand on my back. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sing a prayer.<\/em><\/strong> Dad wasn\u2019t much of a singer, but it never stopped him from singing, especially in church. As I used to joke, \u201cHe had a few good notes\u2026and sometimes they were the right ones.\u201d I still feel his joy <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/entertainment\/music\/rick-hamlin-sings-there-is-a-balm-in-gilead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when I sing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For our own two boys, we\u2019d sing a lullaby every night. \u201cTender shepherd, tender shepherd\u2026\u201d A round. We would all sing together until we reached those final lyrics, \u201cFast asleep, fast asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Living together in a family requires harmony. Not everyone has the same range or the same notes. But when you put the voices together, they <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/angels\/an-adoptee-from-china-finds-peace-in-his-mothers-singing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">merge into tuneful melody.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Let your children hear you pray for them.<\/em><\/strong> How powerful it is for a child to hear <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-family\/5-fervent-prayers-for-your-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a parent pray for them.<\/a> To know they are loved. To know their concerns count. We\u2019d hear Dad pray for whatever was concerning us, whether it was a big test in the morning or a game we were playing or a treehouse we were building. He was on it. We could grasp God\u2019s love because we experienced our earthly father\u2019s love in his prayers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Pray for others<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> Dad\u2019s dinnertime graces always ended with \u201cBless this food to our use and the hands that prepared it.\u201d Mom. That would be Mom\u2019s hands. Truth to tell, she wasn\u2019t a great cook\u2014sorry, Mom\u2014but she was a great mom. And maybe it was because <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/faith-prayer-devotions\/stories-of-faith-faith-prayer-devotions\/a-surprising-song-at-a-moms-funeral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those hands were blessed night after night.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As my two sons prepare to enter into that wonderful phase of life called fatherhood, I reflect on what I learned from my father.
