Turn off the light, put away whatever I\u2019ve been reading, sit up with my back against the pillows, close my eyes and pray. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-to-give-yourself-some-precious-time-to-hear-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I\u2019ve talked a lot about praying in the morning, <\/a>how I plop myself on our lumpy sofa in what we call \u201cthe TV room\u201d (although there hasn\u2019t been TV in there in years) and sink into silent, contemplative, meditative prayer. Can\u2019t start the day without it.<\/p>\n<p>But at the end of the day, the need is still there. And for some of the same reasons.<\/p>\n<p>People often complain about the <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-to-pray-past-distractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distractions that crowd our minds<\/a> whenever we pray. Do I find my mind full of distractions? Of course, I do. It\u2019s only natural. But I wouldn\u2019t exactly label them as \u201cdistractions,\u201d not after I\u2019ve put them into prayer. They\u2019re what I need to share with God. The emails to send, the texts to respond to, the things on the to-do list\u2026articles (like this) to write. Opportunities to get some heavenly perspective.<\/p>\n<p>That list can still be there in my over-active brain at night. And I\u2019m not going to have a good night\u2019s sleep if I fret over it. Time again to do the work of \u201ccatch and release.\u201d Catch the thoughts and <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/angels\/cutting-through-the-chaos-to-listen-for-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release them to God. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>No wonder Mom and Dad made sure <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/parenting\/how-one-mom-taught-her-son-to-pray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all four of us kids said our prayers<\/a> before bed every night, reciting it as fast as we could: <em>Jesus, Tender Shepherd, hear me, bless this little lamb tonight. Through the darkness be down near me, keep me safe till morning light.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was the last thing we did. Then Mom or Dad would kiss our foreheads. Lights out.<\/p>\n<p>As parents, my wife and I did something similar with <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/what-my-dad-taught-me-about-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our two boys.<\/a> They got in their p.j.\u2019s, brushed their teeth, jumped into their bunkbeds (in what we still call \u201cthe boys\u2019 room\u201d) and we\u2019d sing our prayer altogether: \u201cTender Shepherd, Tender Shepherd, let me help you count Your sheep, one in the meadow, two in the garden, three in the nursery, fast asleep.\u201d We kissed them goodnight, then lights out.<\/p>\n<p>These days I don\u2019t sing <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/daily-devotions\/evenings-with-jesus-a-lullaby-leads-to-a-love-of-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lullaby before falling asleep,<\/a> but the need for prayer is still there. To check in with the Good Shepherd before I check out. No song, no hurried verse. Just an emptying of the mind.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes closed, a few thoughts pass through the mind\u2019s eye. A concern someone\u2019s shared, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/the-best-thing-to-do-for-spiritual-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a pestering irritation<\/a> of my own, something I need to let go of. Now is the time. After all, what is a Tender Shepherd for but to look after His sheep?<\/p>\n<p>A car outside might pass by; I\u2019ll hear someone walking their dog; the radiator rattles. Forget it all. Listen to the wind blow, know how the stars are shining and the moon rising or setting.<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s got it all in His hands.
