Saying \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d is among the earliest habits we teach our children. It\u2019s Courtesy 101. Basic manners. <\/a><\/p>\n

For many of us, however, those manners seldom seem to creep into our prayer lives. When we\u2019re desperate,<\/a> of course, we may plead (perhaps even repeatedly), \u201cPlease, God, please.\u201d And we do say \u201cthank you\u201d every so often\u2014and not just on Sundays or national holidays.<\/p>\n

But \u201cplease-and-thank-you prayers\u201d ought to be a staple of our prayer lives, even when others give expression to our deepest and most fervent thoughts. <\/p>\n

For example, I have long prayed nightly Compline prayers from the Daily Office (I posted about it here).<\/a> One of those prayers, drawn from Psalm 31:5 and Psalm 17:8, is, \u201cInto your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit; For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. Keep me as the apple of your eye, and hide me under the shadow of your wings.\u201d <\/p>\n

But I long ago turned it into a \u201cplease-and-thank-you prayer,\u201d changing it just slightly and praying it so many times that it\u2019s engraved in my heart and mind as, \u201cInto your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit; For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. Please<\/em> keep me as the apple of your eye and thank you <\/em>for hiding me under the shadow of your wings.\u201d<\/p>\n

That common courtesy even infiltrates my frequent repetition of the Lord\u2019s Prayer<\/a> (when I\u2019m not praying it in unison with others, that is). I\u2019ll typically say, \u201cPlease<\/em> give us this day our daily bread,\u201d and \u201cplease<\/em> forgive us our trespasses,\u201d etc. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve come to apply \u201cplease-and-thank-you\u201d to more than set prayers. In my personal prayers of petition<\/a>, I often employ that pattern, saying things such as, \u201cLord, please<\/em> restore Amos to health and wholeness, and thank you<\/em> for the miracles you\u2019ve already performed for him.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPlease-and-thank-you\u201d even works in reverse, so to speak, as I occasionally pray something like, \u201cThank you<\/em> for this good morning of worship; please<\/em> let it expand and continue through this day and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease-and-thank-you prayers\u201d have become such a habit and a blessing to me that I notice their relative absence in corporate settings and worship liturgies. I know that it can often be attributed to changing social mores and shifting language patterns, but I nonetheless frequently add my own silent or whispered \u201cplease-and-thank-you\u201d when praying with others.<\/a> \u201cO God, come to my assistance; O Lord, please<\/em> make haste to help me,\u201d or \u201cplease<\/em> grant that we may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your name, amen.\u201d <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been saying \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d to God for so long and so often that it\u2019s a habit now; I like to think it\u2019s a habit that not only enriches me but also blesses Him. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
