Have you ever prayed a poem?<\/a> I have, often. It\u2019s one of my favorite ways to pray.<\/p>\n

It started long ago. As a teenage follower of Jesus, I felt inadequate to articulate the things that were in my heart. My prayer vocabulary was poor. Then one day (in church, probably) it dawned on me that hymns could be not only sung but also spoken. So, I began to employ the poetry of Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley,<\/a> Fanny Crosby, and others as a sort of private diary of prayer. My well-worn hymnal has since bracketed and buttressed my prayers like no other book except the Bible (oddly, it was years later that I began praying the Bible\u2014and the poetry of the Psalms in particular\u2014in much the same way I\u2019d been using the hymnal).<\/p>\n

Not all hymns are prayers, of course. Some teach, some testify, some inspire. But many are prayers written as poetry<\/a>: \u201cHave Thine Own Way,\u201d \u201cGreat Is Thy Faithfulness,\u201d \u201cO Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go,\u201d \u201cTake My Life and Let It Be,\u201d and many others. I also pray poetically by speaking or singing many of today\u2019s worship songs\u2014and even verses or lines from popular music, such as Bruce Cockburn\u2019s \u201cLord of the Starfields\u201d and Todd Rundgren\u2019s \u201cLove is the Answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of my favorite poets have given me beautiful words to pray, in rhyme, blank verse, and free verse.<\/p>\n

For example, I\u2019ve lifted many lines from William Shakespeare\u2019s<\/a> for my own prayers over the years, such as Prospero\u2019s epilogue from The Tempest<\/em>, which I sometimes pray when starting a new project: \u201cGentle breath of yours my sails \/ Must fill, or else my project fails.\u201d Or Henry V\u2019s prayer, \u201cHow thou pleasest, God, dispose the day!\u201d Or the first lines of Sonnet 39 (adapted by me to address to God, of course):<\/p>\n

O how thy worth with manners may I sing,
\nWhen thou art all the better part of me?
\nWhat can mine own praise to mine own self bring?
\nAnd what is but mine own when I praise thee?<\/p>\n

Other poets inspire and infuse my prayer times. Lines from Mary Oliver\u2019s poems<\/a> \u201cLook and See,\u201d \u201cThe Trees,\u201d and \u201cMysteries, Yes,\u201d are among my favorite prayers. I revisit Robert Frost\u2019s \u201cOh, give us pleasure in the flowers today\u201d every spring, as well as his delightful lines from \u201cCluster of Faith\u201d:<\/p>\n

Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee,
\nAnd I’ll forgive Thy great big one on me.<\/p>\n

Many of my favorite poets<\/a> are favorites because their poems are often prayers: Gerard Manley Hopkins, Christina Rossetti, Walter Brueggemann, Malcolm Guite (especially his David\u2019s Crown: Sounding the Psalms<\/em>), and Wendell Berry.<\/p>\n

And, though I can\u2019t lay claim to being a poet myself, I\u2019ve sometimes prayed my own lines\u2014writing and praying new words to a well-known hymn<\/a> tune or riffing off new lines inspired by someone else\u2019s, like so:<\/p>\n

Lord of honeysuckle,
\nLord of melons,
\nLord of sweetness,
\nLord of starfire,
\nLord of wheatfield,
\nLord of desert,
\nLord of plenty,
\nLord of want,
\nLord of mystery,
\nLord of me,
\nhave mercy,
\nLord, have mercy.<\/p>\n
