\u201cYou\u2019re never more like Jesus than when you pray for others,\u201d Max Lucado says in his new book Before Amen<\/em><\/a>. When I read those words I thought, \u201cWow,\u201d then paused and asked, \u201cDo I really feel like Jesus when I pray for others?\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course it\u2019s good to pray for others. If you\u2019re known as a praying person, people will ask you to pray.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll scribble a name down on a Post It note or print out an email from someone who\u2019s suffering from illness, loss, depression, financial troubles.<\/p>\n

When I get too wrapped up in my own problems, it\u2019s a relief to pray for someone else.<\/p>\n

Just logging on to OurPrayer<\/a> and reading through a dozen requests is helpful. It gives me perspective. \u201cGod,\u201d I\u2019ll pray, \u201cyou\u2019ve really got to help this person because their needs are huge, so much bigger than my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

But how is this like Jesus? I tried to think of the times Jesus prayed for others.<\/p>\n

The first occasion that came to mind was when He was on the cross, dying. Didn\u2019t He pray for the criminal next to Him, saying, \u201cI assure you that today you will be with Me in paradise?\u201d (Luke 23:43)<\/p>\n

And I recalled in the Sermon on the Mount how he gives us that enormous challenge, not just to love our enemies but to \u201cpray for those who harass you.\u201d (Matthew 5:44)<\/p>\n

Wasn\u2019t that exactly what He did when He prayed, \u201cFather, forgive them, for they don\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing?\u201d (Luke 23:34) He was praying for His enemies.<\/p>\n

Or take the Lord\u2019s Prayer. It\u2019s not just \u201cme, me, me\u201d; it\u2019s all \u201cus, us, us.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cGive us<\/em> this day our<\/em> daily bread\u2026Forgive us<\/em>\u2026Lead us<\/em> not into temptation but deliver us<\/em> from evil\u2026\u201d (Matthew 6: 9) To pray it is <\/em>to pray for others.<\/p>\n

He also prayed to heal others, like the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years and touched His robe. \u201cDaughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace,\u201d He told her (Mark 5:34).<\/p>\n

And then there is that extraordinary prayer He says in the Gospel of John that takes up all of chapter seven, one long prayer for His disciples and all who believe because of them, which would be us.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in them and You are in Me so that they will be made perfectly one,\u201d He says. \u201cThen the world will know that You sent Me and that You have loved them just as You loved Me.\u201d (John 17:23)<\/p>\n

It made me realize how prayer is at the heart of his ministry. I can\u2019t preach like Jesus. I can\u2019t heal like Him. I can\u2019t teach like Him. But I can do this. I can pray for others.<\/p>\n
