What a delight. Even better: he only lives half a block away. We are close at hand to lend a hand. And then to bring him home to his loving parents when he\u2019s done with us.<\/p>\n<p>As I was holding him in my arms the other evening, I thought to myself, \u201cWhat prayers could this child use? What are my <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/faith-prayer-devotions\/stories-of-faith-faith-prayer-devotions\/5-things-my-grandchildren-teach-me-about-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deepest wishes<\/a> for him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-49785\" alt=\"Rick and his grandson Silas\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/silas_and_rick.jpg\" style=\"float:right\" width=\"335\" \/>May he always know he\u2019s loved<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> I pray he grows up knowing and feeling so loved that he takes it for granted, as I did. You don\u2019t even wonder about it\u2014not until you\u2019re all grown up and then you look back and say, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/what-my-dad-taught-me-about-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWow, what a gift that was.\u201d<\/a> The gift that helps us understand and accept God\u2019s enduring love.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Give this child endless curiosity<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> At just a couple of months I can see it already. The way Silas gazes up at sky when he\u2019s in his stroller, the peering look he gives his parents, an exploring finger wrapped around one of my fingers. May that curiosity serve him well as he discovers the <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/how-cockatiels-inspired-thoughts-of-eternity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wonders of God\u2019s world.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Guide this grandchild through the best of friends.<\/em><\/strong> He\u2019s got wonderful parents who will teach him much and have already established a happy household, but there comes a time when any kid looks to his peers for models of behavior\u2014especially in their teen years. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/friends\/these-faith-filled-sorority-sisters-found-common-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great friends with good values<\/a> keep them on the right track (how true that was for his father, our son Tim). Bring the right friends into Silas\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Uphold this child in a faith community.<\/em><\/strong> We couldn\u2019t have raised our own children without <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/7-ways-church-can-make-you-happier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the help of our church,<\/a> with other parents teaching Sunday school, with a family togetherness every Sunday morning, with worship and praise and Bible readings. Sometimes on a Sunday, I\u2019d see them fidgeting in church and think, \u201cThey haven\u2019t heard a word.\u201d And then to my surprise, they\u2019d ask a question inspired by a sermon that I thought went right over their heads. You can\u2019t really second-guess God.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Help me be the grandparent my grandchild needs.<\/em><\/strong> I\u2019m in complete awe\u2014and much humbled\u2014when I think of all that my parents did as grandparents. The trips they took each grandchild on, the gifts they gave at Christmas and birthdays, the listening ear they always offered. Help me be <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/family\/grandchildren\/10-heartwarming-quotes-about-grandparents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as generous and kind as they always were<\/a>. No wonder our children always ran into their open arms.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Let Silas know hope.<\/em><\/strong> As Carl Sandburg once said, and others have said, \u201cA baby is God\u2019s opinion that the world should go on.\u201d It\u2019s easy to become discouraged at some of the dire news in the world and the pessimistic hopes for the future. But to believe in God is <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/inspiring-stories\/stories-of-faith-and-hope\/a-mountaintop-rescue-came-together-with-gods-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to believe in hope.<\/a> To live by it.
