She would pray for their safety, wisdom and wise choices. The practice continued through their school years. But when they left home for college, we had to settle for just one prayer together in a dorm room or apartment.<\/p>\n<p>And when it came to <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/friends-and-family\/marriage\/a-prayer-for-my-daughter-on-her-wedding-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their wedding days<\/a>, we prayed yet again. Now they were leaving home, for good. <\/p>\n<p>I wish we\u2019d had a way to record those prayers which, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/how-to-pray\/how-to-pray-with-your-children-in-tough-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changed over the years<\/a>. But after adjusting for age and maturity, the gist was usually much the same. It followed a pattern like these prayers that can be prayed over a child of any age who is leaving the house\u2014or leaving home\u2014for whatever reason: <\/p>\n<p><strong>1)  The Aaronic Blessing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Lord bless you<br \/>\n    and keep you;<br \/>\nthe Lord make His face shine on you<br \/>\n    and be gracious to you;<br \/>\nthe Lord turn His face toward you<br \/>\n    and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26, NIV)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)  The Irish Blessing (slightly revised)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>May the road rise up to meet you.<br \/>\nMay the wind always be at your back. <br \/>\nMay the sun shine warm upon your face;<br \/>\nand rains fall soft upon your efforts* <br \/>\nand until we meet again,<br \/>\nmay God hold you in the palm of His hand.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>Revised. The original is phrased, \u201cupon your fields.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3)  St. Patrick\u2019s Breastplate (slightly revised)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christ go with you, Christ before you,<br \/>\nChrist behind you, Christ within you,<br \/>\nChrist beneath you, Christ above you,<br \/>\nChrist at your right, Christ at your left.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)  The Lorica of St. Fursey (slightly revised)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The arms of God be around your shoulders,<br \/>\nThe touch of the Holy Spirit upon your head, <br \/>\nThe sign of Christ\u2019s cross upon your forehead, <br \/>\nThe sound of the Holy Spirit in your ears,<br \/>\nThe fragrance of the Holy Spirit in your nostrils, <br \/>\nThe vision of heaven\u2019s company in your eyes, <br \/>\nThe conversation of heaven\u2019s company on your lips, <br \/>\nThe work of God\u2019s church in your hands,<br \/>\nThe service of God and the neighbor in your feet, <br \/>\nA home for God in your heart,<br \/>\nAnd to God, the Father of all, your entire being. <\/p>\n<p><strong>5)  David\u2019s Song (based on Psalm 28:7)<\/strong><br \/>\nMay the Lord be your strength and shield; <br \/>\nlet your heart trust in Him, and be helped by Him. <br \/>\nMay your heart leap for joy,<br \/>\nand a song of praise to Him be always in your mouth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When our children started grade school, my wife would gather them in her arms and pray for them before they walked out.
