My wife and I, along with our son, daughter-in-law and their two children, joined Avery, her parents and two siblings. Avery agreed to say grace over her birthday dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod, I\u2019m sorry to wake you up,\u201d she said, \u201cbut thank you for this food.\u201d She went on to express her hopes for her birthday and her happiness to be celebrating with her family. After she finished, we congratulated her on a fine prayer. No one tried to correct her. Everyone recognized that a theologically \u201cwrong\u201d prayer can still be spiritually right, whether the person praying is six or ninety-six.<\/p>\n<p>We often get hung up on finding the most appropriate words to pray, but if \u201cthe Lord looks at the heart\u201d (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV), then praying badly is a lot harder than we think. As Jesus said, \u201cYour Father knows what you need before you ask him\u201d (Matthew 6:8 NIV), so we can relax and tell God what is <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/positive-living\/health-and-wellness\/better-living\/emotional-and-mental-health\/naked-prayers-honest-confessions-to-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truly in our hearts<\/a>, even if the words that come to us feel less than perfect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you\u2019ve stumbled <\/strong><br \/>\nThe New Testament writer promised, \u201cIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteous\u00adness\u201d (1 John 1:9 NIV). He drew a straight line from confession to forgiveness and cleansing. He didn\u2019t say that we need to plead or beg or cajole. He didn\u2019t prescribe a formula for us to follow. He said: We <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-stronger-faith\/the-power-of-confession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confess<\/a>; God forgives.<\/p>\n<p>However you say it\u2014\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d \u201cI messed up,\u201d \u201cI blew it,\u201d \u201cI sinned\u201d\u2014God will hear and forgive and restore you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you\u2019re angry <\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s easy to say the wrong thing when we\u2019re angry. But if the prayers of the Bible are any indication, we can tell God what\u2019s really on our minds even when we\u2019re mad. \u201cThe Lord knows people\u2019s thoughts\u201d (Psalm 94:11 NLT), so we might as well let it all out. Whether it\u2019s anger at yourself, circumstances, other people (or even God), who better to tell it to than the God who created you and loves you? So go ahead. <a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/angels-and-miracles\/miracles\/the-big-question-is-it-wrong-to-be-angry-with-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pray your anger<\/a>\u2014after all, it\u2019s hard to pray through your anger if you won\u2019t <em>express <\/em>your anger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you have no words <\/strong><br \/>\nSometimes we\u2019re so frustrated, overwhelmed or burdened that<a href=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/prayers-for-strength\/6-ways-to-pray-when-there-are-no-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> we can\u2019t convey what we\u2019re thinking or feeling<\/a>. Even then, it\u2019s hard to pray badly: \u201cWe do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit him\u00adself intercedes for us through word\u00adless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God\u2019s people in accordance with the will of God\u201d (Romans 8:26\u201327 NIV).
