It\u2019s a beautiful, but sometimes confusing, part of the prayer commonly called The Lord\u2019s Prayer. <\/a>Some pray it every day. Some several times a day. Some in church. Some in private.<\/p>\n

When Jesus showed His first followers how to pray, He included a plea for forgiveness: \u201cForgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us\u201d (Luke 11:4, NIV). In some versions, the prayer is, \u201cForgive us our debts.\u201d In others, it\u2019s \u201cForgive us our trespasses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regardless of the exact words, the thought is the same. But what are we really saying when we say, \u201cForgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us?\u201d<\/p>\n

First, we\u2019re saying, \u201cI\u2019ve sinned. I\u2019ve done wrong. I\u2019ve crossed the line.\u201d It\u2019s an admission, a confession<\/a>, a\u00a0mea culpa<\/em>\u00a0(to use the old Latin phrase). That\u2019s key, because the Bible says, \u201cIf we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness\u201d (1 John 1:9, NIV).<\/p>\n

We\u2019re also saying that we want and need forgiveness<\/a>. In fact, when Jesus modeled this for His followers, He linked the petition for daily bread with the petition for forgiveness. \u201cForgive us\u201d comes right after \u201cGive us this day our daily bread.\u201d It\u2019s a hint that we need both, every day\u2014food and forgiveness. We should pray for both on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

But notice also that Jesus linked our forgiveness from God with our forgiveness of others. \u201cForgive us,\u201d He told us to pray, \u201cas<\/em>\u00a0we forgive.\u201d As. It\u2019s a tiny word, both in English and in Greek. When we say, \u201cForgive us \u2026 as we forgive,\u201d we\u2019re acknowledging the truth that Jesus taught, that being forgiven is tied to our forgiveness of others.<\/p>\n

The phrase can be taken to mean, \u201cForgive us\u00a0in the same way\u00a0<\/em>we forgive others;\u201d it can be understood as a suggestion that our forgiveness of others<\/a> will set the tone for the Father\u2019s forgiveness of us. So when I pray, \u201cForgive us\u00a0as<\/em>\u00a0we forgive others,\u201d I am saying I want my mercy to be expanded.<\/p>\n

I want to forgive willingly, because that\u2019s the kind of reception I want from God. I don\u2019t want God to measure out my forgiveness in measly human ways; I want to measure out forgiveness to others in big ol\u2019 God ways. I want to be willing to forgive. I want to be quick to forgive. I want to forgive fully. I want to forgive repeatedly. Because all of those things are how I want\u2014how I\u00a0need<\/em>\u2014God to forgive me<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And just as my plea to be forgiven is a daily need, so my forgiveness of others can be a daily decision<\/a>. \u201cForgive us\u00a0as<\/em>\u00a0we forgive.\u201d In other words, \u201cforgive us today as we are forgiving today.\u201d<\/p>\n

No matter how deeply I feel someone has hurt me, I can choose\u2014today\u2014in realization of the grace God has shown me, to extend mercy to other. I don\u2019t have to feel like it. I don\u2019t have to drag up any warm feelings for those people. But I can refuse to retaliate. I can wipe the slate clean. I can forgive that debt. I can pray, \u201cForgive us today as we are forgiving others today.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as I do that, day by day, I will be forgiven\u2026and I will experience the healing and wholeness that comes from releasing others\u2019 sins against me. And, day by day, be released of sin\u2019s hold on me as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
