Prayer can be boring. We say the same things in the same words over and over again. We tend toward the same subjects and concerns, and all that \u201csameness\u201d can lead to monotony and frustration.<\/p>\n

That is one good reason (among many) to introduce the richness, depth, of variety of a few Hebrew words into your praying.<\/p>\n

You probably already use the most common Hebrew prayer word\u2014\u201camen\u201d\u2014which can mean several things but is most commonly understood as \u201cyes, let it be so.\u201d But here are five other Hebrew words that can inform, guide and enrich your prayers:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0 Hallelujah<\/strong>
\nYou already knew this word. Hallelujah and its root word, \u201chalal,\u201d occurs dozens of times in the Psalms. It means simply \u201cpraise God!\u201d In public worship it is frequently sung (e.g., \u201cHallelujah! What a Savior!\u201d) and sometimes shouted. It is less often used in private times of prayer. But it doesn\u2019t have to be excluded from your personal prayer life.<\/p>\n

Try saying hallelujah<\/em> anytime your soul swells with praise and thanks to God. Say hallelujah<\/em> to express your appreciation for God\u2019s beauty, faithfulness, power and presence.<\/p>\n

If you pray the \u201cGloria\/Glory Be,\u201d you might even sometimes substitute the Hebrew equivalent for the English word \u201cglory\u201d or \u201cpraise.\u201d (\u201cHallelujah to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,\u201d etc.)<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0 Teshuvah<\/strong>
\nLiterally, \u201creturn,\u201d teshuvah<\/em> is the Hebrew word for \u201crepentance.\u201d It doesn\u2019t mean to \u201cbe sorry\u201d but to \u201cturn around,\u201d to change direction and \u201cdo a 180,\u201d so to speak. Teshuvah<\/em> is such an important concept that the Talmud says God created repentance before He created the physical universe. So include teshuvah<\/em> in your prayers, not only confessing your sins but turning your back on them and returning to your God.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0 Tsedek<\/strong>
\nWhen David sang, \u201cHe leads me in the paths of righteousness\u201d (Psalm 23:3, NKJV), he sang the word, tsedek<\/em>. When Amos prayed, \u201clet justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream\u201d (Amos 5:24, NIV), he used the Hebrew words tsedek<\/em> (righteousness) and mizpat<\/em> (justice).<\/p>\n

Tsedek<\/em> means not only upright behavior but also just and wise actions. So pray for more tsedek<\/em> in your life and community and world.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0 Chesed<\/strong>
\nChesed<\/em> is one of the richest and deepest words in the Hebrew language. It is most often translated as \u201clovingkindess\u201d or \u201cmercy\u201d in the Bible. It is intrinsic to God\u2019s character and incumbent upon God\u2019s people. Chesed<\/em> is so rich in meaning that it can\u2019t be expressed with a single English word.<\/p>\n

When you pray for chesed<\/em> in your life and the lives of those around you, you pray for God\u2019s beauty, grace, kindness, mercy and generosity to flow in and from the objects of your prayer.<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0 Shalom<\/strong>
\nShalom<\/em> means \u201cpeace.\u201d But, like chesed, it is a much bigger word than that single syllable. Shalom<\/em> is used by Hebrew-speakers to say \u201chello\u201d and \u201cgoodbye.\u201d It is a prayer (Psalm 122:6). It is a blessing (Psalm 122:8). It conveys not only the idea of peace but also of health and wholeness, of everything being right and pleasing.<\/p>\n

So say shalom<\/em> in your prayers. Pray for the shalom<\/em> of God, \u201cwhich transcends all understanding, [to] guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus\u201d (Philippians 4:7, NIV). Pray for shalom<\/em> to rule your heart, life, home, family, church, community, country and world.<\/p>\n

Just five words, but each is rich in meaning. Each holds far more beauty than the most common English equivalents. And each can make a difference not only in how you pray but also in how God answers your prayers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
