In the rhythms of His Creation, God graciously placed cues and reminders that can regularly turn His people to prayer: morning<\/a> and evening; Sabbath and work; winter<\/a>, spring, summer and fall. Now is the perfect time to turn to prayers for fall.<\/p>\n

Though we modern folk\u2014with our electric lighting and temperature controls, among other things\u2014are less sensitive to such prompts as previous generations, with just a little effort we can still let the changing seasons point us to prayer . . . as these simple prayers<\/a> are intended to do.<\/p>\n

The first three autumn prayers are written by me (the third with an assist by Emily Dickinson) and the fourth autumn prayer is unattributed:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0 Autumn Praise<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I praise you, Lord, for autumn:
\nfor falling temperatures and morning chill,
\ntrees turned gold and red, brown and orange,
\nfalling leaves and blowing leaves,
\nthe smell of burning leaves,
\nthe joy of leaf-pile jumping.<\/p>\n

I praise you, Lord, for autumn:
\nthe interplay of outside temperatures
\nand inside warmth,
\nthe promise of cider and pumpkin bread,
\nthe blessing of blankets and sweaters.<\/p>\n

I praise you, Lord, for autumn:
\nthe beauty and hope in the change of season,
\nthe promise that the coming of autumn
\nheralds another ending,
\na new beginning,
\nand the wonder of another winter,
\nanother spring,
\nanother summer,
\nyet to come.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0 A Powerful Prayer for Fall<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Abba, Father, the trees are ablaze with your glory.
\nThe seasons change, but you never do.
\nYou are always beautiful,
\nin the green and freshness of spring
\nas in the golds and reds and chills of autumn.
\nMake me like you.
\nLet my life reflect your beauty,
\nseason after season,
\nas the calendar of my life turns and turns and turns.<\/p>\n

The trees are letting go of this year’s foliage.
\nHelp me let go of both blessings and burdens,
\nand surrender them both to your loving care.<\/p>\n

Fallen leaves pattern the ground with variety.
\nSo design my own fallings and failings
\ninto whatever design will please you most.
\nIn Jesus’ name, I pray,<\/p>\n

Amen.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0 An Simple Autumn Petition Prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As summer into autumn slips,*
\nO give me grace today
\nTo rise and turn as summer’s leaves
\nDraw life and strength from heavenly rays.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0 An Autumn Prayer Poem<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When I must go, dear God, please let it be
\nA golden autumn day; when red leaves fall,
\nWhen purple grapes in shining clusters hang
\nAnd bittersweet glows bright against the wall,<\/p>\n

When o’er the barren fields and russet meads
\nTheir last farewells the crickets cry.
\nLet me make my silent journey
\nWhen the homing birds fly south across the sky.<\/p>\n

When I must go, dear God, please let me go
\nAs silently as autumn rain,
\nAs still as lacy shadows ‘neath the willow trees,
\nAs calm as is the moon above the hill.<\/p>\n

So let me go\u2014and may there be no grief
\nWhen life is done and I must say goodbye.
\nI’ll take my leave with flowers and falling leaf
\nAnd lie in peaceful sleep beneath the sky.<\/p>\n
