Here Are Some Favorite Single-Syllables Words of Prayer<\/h3>\n

The idea of short one-word prayers is hardly original with me. As you know, Guideposts offers much help in this arena, including a book\u2014available for now as an e-book<\/a>\u2014with some great examples (okay, I offered a few myself).<\/a><\/p>\n

Let me also offer up some advice\u2014also not original with me\u2014that comes from a 14th<\/sup>-century anonymous English writer, probably a monk, who authored a wonderful book called\u00a0The Cloud of Unknowing.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

What he suggests\u2014it\u2019s probably a \u201che\u201d\u2014is using not just single words but words of one syllable, like God, faith, hope, love, Christ, peace, even sin. \u201cSin?\u201d I wondered. Why \u201csin?\u201d As the\u00a0Cloud<\/em>\u00a0author writes, \u201cIf your word is\u00a0sin<\/em>, focus on sin as a lump, impenetrable to your mind, but none other than yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, I have sinned, and I do sin, and admitting it to God in prayer<\/a> is a way to be free of sin. After all, it\u2019s there in the Lord\u2019s Prayer, \u201cForgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Or \u201ctrespasses\u201d or \u201cdebts.\u201d Whatever translation you\u2019re using, it\u2019s all the same.<\/p>\n

So let me give you some of my favorite single-syllable words of prayer:<\/p>\n

God<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is my favorite. I come back to it again and again. Can you think of three letters that say more? That encompass so much? Using the word \u201cGod\u201d in prayer pulls me back to what\u2019s important, what I need to share, what must be at the center of my life.<\/a><\/p>\n

Peace<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s never enough of it in the world, and so if I\u2019m using this word in prayer, I\u2019m asking not only for peace in the world but peace also in my heart.<\/a> The world can only change one person at a time. Or as a song we used to sing puts it, \u201cLet there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Love<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The more you give, the more you have. Being stingy with love is a losing battle. You give love away, and you get more love back.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

When I pray the word \u201clove\u201d I\u2019m asking for God to fill my heart with God\u2019s perfect love. To love others as I love myself. Jesus commanded us to even love our enemies. Of the three virtues, faith, hope and love\u2014as the Apostle Paul put it\u2014love is the greatest.<\/p>\n

Hope<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hope means looking ahead\u2026hopefully. Full of positive thoughts. The news barrages us with information that makes us look to the future in fear. Hope is just the opposite of that. And I find it impossible to hope without God, without prayer.<\/a><\/p>\n

Strength<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As Jesus said you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your strength (Luke 10:27). The image that comes to mind is some guy at the gym pumping iron. But I don\u2019t think Jesus is talking just about physical strength but inner strength.<\/p>\n

Here again, it\u2019s in the giving that we receive. God gives us strength when we love God<\/a> with that part of our being. I can feel that strength, that resilience, simply by praying the word.<\/p>\n
