{"id":25266,"date":"2026-03-11T17:10:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/uncategorized\/pray-dangerously\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T02:48:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T02:48:39","slug":"pray-dangerously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/prayer\/true-stories-of-answered-prayer\/pray-dangerously\/","title":{"rendered":"Pray Dangerously"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">The Gospel writer Mark relates an incident that happened one day as Jesus and his closest followers were on their way into the city of Jerusalem. He says that Jesus saw \u201ca fig tree in leaf\u201d and went to it to see if it had any young figs to eat. When he saw that there were none, \u201che said to it, \u2018May no one ever eat fruit from you again\u2019\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+11%3A14&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 11:14, ESV<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">The next morning, as he and his disciples made the same trek into the city, \u201cthey saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.\u201d Peter remarked on it to Jesus, as though he or anyone should be surprised. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">But Jesus said, \u201cHave faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, \u2018Be taken up and thrown into the sea,\u2019 and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+11%3A22-24&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 11:22-24, ESV<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"462\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-42257\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gpbookstore.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blog_redletter_300.jpg\" style=\"width: 300px;height: 462px;margin-left: 15px;margin-right: 15px;float: right\" \/>There is so much going on in that passage, and so much to study and think about. But for our purposes here and now, I want to focus on perhaps the most straightforward and easy-to-understand part of the whole story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">When Peter expressed amazement at the withered fig tree, Jesus could have responded any number of ways. He might have said, \u201cI know, I got a little grumpy yesterday when there were no young figs on the tree. My bad.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">He might have answered Peter, \u201cLet that be a lesson to you: Don\u2019t cross me when I\u2019m hungry.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">He might have said, \u201cI hope one of you will write this down later, so people will know how important it is to be fruitful, in season or out of season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">But, of course, he said none of those things (and I\u2019m not suggesting you take any of those possibilities seriously). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Instead, Jesus turned the whole fig tree incident into a lesson on prayer. In fact, my paraphrase of his exchange with Peter goes something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\">\u201cRabbi! Look at that! The fig tree you cursed is all withered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:35.45pt\">\u201cOf course it is, Peter. Sheesh, have some faith in God! A fig tree is nothing; if you had the faith, and the boldness, you could pray for this mountain right here  to be thrown into the sea\u201330-some miles away\u2013and it would happen! The question is not will a fig tree wither at your word or a mountain move at your command; the question is, will you ask for it in prayer and believe that your Father will do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Of course, Jesus may have had an advantage<\/span>\u2013<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">being the incarnate Son of God<\/span>\u2013<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">but he clearly and boldly stated that his followers could do anything he did<\/span>\u2013<span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">He said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+14%3A12-13%2C+ESV&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:12-13, ESV<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Greater than having authority over a fig tree? Apparently so (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+5%3A1-10&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 5:1-10<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Greater than healing a paralyzed man? Apparently so (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+3%3A1-11&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 3:1-11<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Greater than raising a widow\u2019s son from the dead? Apparently so (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+9%3A36-41&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Acts 9:36-41<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Apparently that first generation of Jesus\u2019 followers took his promises seriously. They prayed for boldness (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+4%3A29&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Acts 4:29<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">). They prayed for prisoners to be released (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+12%3A5&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Acts 12:5<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">). They prayed for the sick to be healed (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+28%3A8&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Acts 28:8<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">). They prayed for the dead to be raised (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+9%3A40&amp;version=ESV\" style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Acts 9:40<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.428571429\">Those were bold prayers. Dangerous, even, as they often got Jesus\u2019 followers into trouble. But they changed the people who prayed them, even as they changed the world. So pray those kinds of prayers. Pray \u201cgreater than\u201d prayers. Pray boldly.
