A Beloved TV Father’s Inspiring Story

Through their 60-plus years of writing for Guideposts, John and Elizabeth Sherrill have encountered some incredibly inspiring stories, and shared them with us.

Now as they look back on their amazing journey of life and faith, the Sherrills are revisiting some of their favorites—survival stories, real life love stories, angel sightings and more—so that we can be inspired by them all over again.

It was 1965—no Internet then. I’d flown out to Los Angeles on another Guideposts assignment when I had an excited phone call from the editor back in New York.

“I’ve landed an interview for you with Lorne Greene!”

The name meant nothing to me, but from Len LeSourd’s tone, I gathered it should have.

“Great!” I said.

“You’ll have to see him at the TV studio,” Len went on, giving the address.

A clue: this person was on television. (I didn’t watch TV.)

“The Bonanza cast breaks for lunch at noon. He’ll meet you at the canteen.”

Another clue, I thought as I hung up the phone. Bonanza must be one of those quiz shows with big prizes. Maybe Mr. Greene would have a story about some winner who really needed the money. I wrote out a list of questions.

Next morning I got to the studio early. “They’re still filming,” said the receptionist. “Would you like to watch?”

From the side of the set, I saw a rustic log house, a covered wagon and a group of men in boots and ten-gallon hats. Bonanza was a Western!

A handsome gray-haired man introduced himself. We’d have only half an hour in the canteen, he apologized. But a stream of colleagues kept stopping at our table; Mr. Greene was obviously a much-liked man.

With only 13 minutes of our precious half-hour remaining, he asked what part of his native Canada my editor was interested in.

I’d thought he was a quiz MC; he thought Guideposts was a travel magazine. I explained as swiftly as I could.

He was silent as the minutes ticked by (only 9 left…). “I think I have a story that’s right for you,” he said at last. And in 9 minutes he told me why playing the father on Bonanza was his way of remembering the best father he knew.

ABC’s Linsey Davis Teaches Kids to Celebrate Diversity With the Illustrated Book ‘One Big Heart’

ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis is highlighting the importance of children celebrating diversity with her second children’s book, co-written with her mother, Beverly Davis, One Big Heart: A Celebration of Being More Alike Than Different.

The Emmy Award-winning reporter, whose six-year-old son, Ayden, was the inspiration behind the best-selling book, which was published in August 2019, spoke to Guideposts.org about using the multicultural book as a teaching tool in these difficult times.

“I came up with the idea a few years ago because I was worried about the messages that my son was being bombarded with in the news,” she says, noting that he began asking questions about race following the highly publicized arrest of two Black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks in 2018. “It’s difficult to articulate this complex topic for a young child’s mind, but it’s possible, starting with these kinds of books.”

While writing the story, Davis says it was important for her to acknowledge the various ways in which we’re different—from our skin to our hair to our distinctive personalities. “Instead of having a fear of being different, kids should have the opposite mindset and not try to fit in,” she says. “Kids at a very young age—and parents—can use this book to say, ‘Hey we’re different and that’s a good thing.’”

Still, Davis urges both children and adults to remember that, regardless of our unique differences, we all have a lot in common and should focus on the many attributes that unite us.

“People always say that kids don’t see color and I absolutely disagree with that,” she says. “Kids do see color, they just don’t assign a value to it. Adults do.”

As a Christian mother, Davis found it important to incorporate the presence of God in One Big Heart, just as she did in her first children’s book The World is Awake: A Celebration of Everyday Blessings, to highlight that, “We are God’s creations given this one unique gift: one big heart.” She also describes the Bible verse “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:31 KJV), as “the most essential point we can get across to our kids in this time and in our current climate.”

Davis, who reports for World News, Good Morning America, 20/20 and Nightline, acknowledged that it can be difficult for parents to discuss the current protests brought on by the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by police in Minneapolis. But she feels it’s important to provide her son with “an explanation that’s truthful without making him scared or fearful.”

Davis says family and friends have come forward to thank her for creating a resource that enables parents to discuss race, diversity and inclusion with their children in a safe way. “This ugly issue is still pervasive in society,” she says. “It can’t be swept under the rug any longer.”

For much of its history, Hollywood has been something of a boy’s club, but that wasn’t always the case. In the early years, women were major contributors to the motion picture industry, and not just onscreen. Here’s your chance to meet, among others, the first woman to direct a movie, the first woman to own a movie studio and the woman who was the recipient of the first cinematic pie in the face.

7 Wonder-Filled Films

The Academy Awards are coming up this weekend. And since miracles are never too far from my mind, I decided to do a round-up of some of my favorite movies featuring “mysterious ways” elements–voices, not-so-chance encounters, the forces of destiny, obstacles of Biblical proportions and, of course, that mysterious thing called love.

Here are my 7 wonder-filled film picks. Which movies would you add to the list?

1) Little Boy
I saw Little Boy recently over the holidays and it had me crying like a baby. It’s about a small kid with BIG faith who makes the impossible happen…get your tissues ready!

2) While You Were Sleeping
Quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. And perhaps the ultimate “mysterious ways” love story–a series of misunderstandings and mix-ups that somehow leads to two people falling in love.

3) Field of Dreams
This movie really has it all. Strange voices, prophetic dreams, the hereafter, a complex father-son relationship, baseball and, yes, Kevin Costner. A classic that shows there are just some things in this world that can’t be explained.

4) Inside Out
What is it about Pixar films that just hit you at your very core? Even though it’s technically for kids, this movie really opens your eyes to the fascinating complexity of the human brain…not to mention our ingenious creator!

5) It’s a Wonderful Life
I must confess, I have a permanent crush on Jimmy Stewart so I’m a little biased. Even so, perhaps no movie better demonstrates how every act of kindness–no matter how insignificant–can make a huge impact.

6) Serendipity
Two strangers meet over a pair of gloves at Bloomingdale’s and eventually find their way back to each other through a string of “coincidences” in New York City. Okay, I know it’s just a movie, but every time I watch it, my hope in finding a soul mate is renewed!

7) Miracle
The name says it all. An inspiring movie based on the 1980 U.S. men’s hockey team’s unlikely journey to Olympic gold. A true underdog tale…and we all know God has a soft spot for underdogs!
